Working at The DOVE center, a free shelter that provides resources to women struggling with abusive relationships, I have seen first hand how little resources and protections there are for individuals that are victims of domestic violence. In fact, nearly 50% of all homicides within our state can be attributed to domestic violence, yet repeat offenders are all too often given slap on the wrist, and even shared custody of children. Not only does the fear of losing children in a custody battle keep victims with their abusers, but the lack of resources such as affordable housing, legal help, and support structures force victims to be trapped in an abusive relationship, or even far worse. I want to work to make these resources more available with programs like the one I currently work in. Additionally, holding abusers in our state accountable will not only help to protect our children, but will also significantly decrease the homicide rate in our state
