Utah’s teen suicide rate consistently ranks higher than the national average, at nearly 2 times the national rate (Utah IBIS). Thankfully, these numbers have improved with access to resources over the years, but there is no denying that there is a correlation between this still too high rate and legislation such as HB 11, which targeted 4 transgender athletes in Utah. Living with my partner Melody has taught me that most Utahns have a big heart, but that doesn’t mean that there is still work to be done. As a legislator, I would work to proactively promote the rights and well being of LGBTQ+ people, as well as foster inclusive, safe, welcoming, and affirming schools and educational environments for LGBTQ students. Nobody in our community should feel unseen, or feel they do not belong. Together, we can work to make our community a safe and accepting place.
